Areas Served: Urban communities in the Anacostia region of southeastern Washington, D.C.
The Children’s Health Project of DC serves communities in the Anacostia region of southeastern Washington, D.C.
In the particular region of DC (Wards 5, 6, 7 and 8) served by the CHPDC, children and youth experience a high degree of socioeconomic and environmental risk factors that often give rise to developmental delays and long-term health problems. These factors include high incidences of infant mortality, infant morbidity, teenage pregnancy, low birth-weights, prenatal exposure to drugs and alcohol and child abuse and neglect.
The Children's Health Project of DC provides comprehensive primary care at sites situated around public housing, within walking distance of schools. When the only public hospital in the city closed, the project incorporated the former DC General pediatric clinic into its practice as a fixed site. Additionally, to address the increasingly unmet dental needs of its patients, the project provides full dental services via a mobile dental unit.
