Areas Served: Evacuees and communities affected by Hurricane Katrina in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and surrounding areas.
Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, The Children’s Health Fund formed Operation Assist, a collaborative effort between CHF and the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. The Baton Rouge Children’s Health Project (BRCHP) was established as an integral component of CHF’s Katrina response.
The BRCHP provides health care to the area’s medically underserved children and families, many of whom are Katrina evacuees relocated to the Baton Rouge area. The Mobile Medical Program delivers comprehensive primary health care using a state-of-the-art mobile medical unit, uniquely suited to the provision of post-disaster health care, allowing clinical teams to bring services directly where they are needed most – and to respond to the changing conditions and needs of the community. In addition, the Community Support and Resiliency Program (CSRP) unit brings desperately needed mental health services to the children traumatized by this disaster. In this way, the Baton Rouge Children’s Health Project addresses some of the regions most persistent barriers to care: lack of insurance, geographic isolation, limited financial resources and inadequate transportation.
The Medical Program of the BRCHP is a partnership between the UJA-Federation of
New York and The Children’s Health Fund.
Additional support provided by United Jewish Communities.
The Community Support and Resiliency Program of the BRCHP is a partnership between The Lucky Brand Foundation and The Children’s Health Fund.
