Ho-Chunk Nation

In the heart of Wisconsin, two hours from the nearest city, lies Black River Falls. This rural community is home to the headquarters of the Ho-Chunk Nation, or People of the Big Voice. With more than 7,000 members scattered throughout the country, but most concentrated in Wisconsin, the Ho-Chunk Nation faces great difficulty in providing access to quality health care for all its members. In affiliating with the Ho-Chunk Department of Health to launch our 25th project, Children’s Health Fund aims to reduce this access barrier for many of the Nation’s 1,455 children.

GOOD HEALTH FOR LIFE

As in many Native American nations, the health statistics for Ho-Chunk are startling. With a high prevalence of asthma and obesity, children are exposed at an early age to the possibility of diabetes and other long-term health consequences. In fact, obesity in Ho-Chunk is five times the national average and 25% of adults have diabetes.  Patient education regarding well-baby care, asthma management and obesity prevention will be key areas of focus.
