The Children’s Health Fund (CHF) strongly supports the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, health reform legislation which was signed into law in March 2010. Over the last twenty years, CHF has worked to address coverage and access issues in our nation’s health care system, and stands firm in the belief that access to health care for all is a fundamental right, especially for children.
Throughout 2009 and 2010, CHF leadership, medical providers and advocates have worked to support passage of this historic legislation. In September 2009, CHF, in partnership with the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Association of Children’s Hospitals hosted an important Capitol Hill event featuring CHF co-founder, Paul Simon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. In concert with other national pediatric and child advocacy groups, CHF delivered a message to national lawmakers urging them to finish their work on healthcare reform and pass legislation that delivers on the promise to provide all children with access to comprehensive health care.

While the legislation signed into law is a momentous step in the right direction towards guaranteeing children access to needed health care services, obstacles will still exist for many underserved children. Critical work remains to ensure that every child has access to care that is comprehensive, continuous, coordinated, compassionate, family-centered and culturally effective – what is called a “medical home.” CHF will continue to work with the Administration and Congress to provide universal access to comprehensive health care for all children.
